As Saigon falls apart in the last days of the Vietnam War, a seventeen-year-old orphan named Kim arrives in the city and is taken on at a seedy bar owned by a smooth-talking hustler known as the Engineer. There she meets Chris, an American soldier, and the two fall deeply in love. When the city is evacuated they are torn apart, and years later the consequences reach across oceans.
