Rome, with Napoleon's army on the march. In the marble and gilt church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, the painter Mario Cavaradossi hides an escaped political prisoner, while his lover, the famous singer Floria Tosca, burns with jealousy over the woman in his altarpiece. Baron Scarpia, the city's feared chief of police, sees in that jealousy a way to catch the fugitive and to possess Tosca, and their struggle moves from his apartments in the Palazzo Farnese to the battlements of the Castel Sant'Angelo at dawn.
