George Moore, a muddled professor of moral philosophy, is drafting a lecture defending God and absolute values, while his wife Dotty, a retired musical-comedy star, throws a party for the Radical Liberals, who have just taken power in an election. The entertainment is a troupe of acrobats drawn from George's university department, and when one of them is shot in the middle of their human pyramid, Inspector Bones arrives to investigate, only to meet the smooth vice-chancellor, Sir Archibald Jumper.
