Oh What a Lovely War is Joan Littlewood and Theatre Workshop's satirical musical collage, first staged in 1963, built from period songs, documentary material and sharply stylised performance. Set against the backdrop of World War I, it uses music hall wit and an ironic, often bleak tone to expose the scale of the conflict, the folly of military command and the human cost carried by soldiers and civilians alike.
