Music John Kander·Lyrics Fred Ebb, Lin-Manuel Miranda·Book David Thompson, Sharon Washington
New York, New York is a musical with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb with additional lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, and a book by David Thompson and Sharon Washington. Loosely based on Martin Scorsese's 1977 film, it is set in 1946, as a post-war city begins to rebuild. Jimmy Doyle, a disillusioned New York musician, meets Francine Evans, an ambitious singer just arrived from Philadelphia, and their romance is tested by ambition and by the racism she meets in the music business. Around them, a Cuban immigrant, a trumpet-playing veteran and a young refugee violinist chase dreams of their own. The score mixes new songs with Kander and Ebb standards, including the title song.
