The Hoover family has seen better days. Richard is a floundering motivational speaker, Grandpa has been thrown out of his retirement home, Uncle Frank has just been dumped by his boyfriend, teenage Dwayne has taken a vow of silence, and overstretched Sheryl can barely keep smiling. When young Olive gets a place in the Little Miss Sunshine children's beauty pageant, the whole family piles into a battered yellow camper van and sets off on a long drive to get her there.
