Midnight

In the American South in the nineteenth century, twelve lives become entangled, six of them Black and six white. At their centre is Rail, a young man sold into slavery as a boy, who falls in love with Lily Rose and whose story becomes bound up with the families around him. Framed as a folktale, it asks what would happen if the life you inherited had belonged to someone else.
