The 39 Steps is a brisk comic adaptation of John Buchan's novel and Charles Bennett's film, reworked by Patrick Barlow into a playful stage thriller for four actors. It follows an ordinary man who is drawn into an apparent spy conspiracy and forced into a breathless race across the country, with the cast taking on dozens of characters through rapid costume changes, physical comedy and inventive theatrical sleight of hand.
