The Government Inspector

In a provincial English town in the late 19th century, the corrupt officials learn that a government inspector is on his way, travelling incognito. In a panic they mistake Percy Fopdoodle, a dissolute young government clerk who has outstayed his welcome at the local inn, for the inspector. Governor Swashprattle, his wife Anna and the town's council shower their guest with flattery, money, wine and entertainment, and Percy is only too happy to play along.
