In Truvy Jones's home beauty parlour in the small Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, six women gather to be curled, set and sprayed, and to trade gossip, insults and advice. Starting on the morning of Shelby's wedding, their visits over the next few years turn from hairdos and husbands to Shelby's health, and to a choice that tests her mother M'Lynn and every friendship in the room.
