On the opening night of a musical version of The Taming of the Shrew in Baltimore, the stormy bond between actor-manager Fred Graham and his leading lady and ex-wife Lilli Vanessi spills from the dressing rooms onto the stage. With Fred chasing the ingénue Lois Lane, her boyfriend Bill in gambling debt and two gangsters caught up in the show, the performance teeters on chaos.
