A convict freed after nineteen years of hard labour finds every door in France closed to him, until a bishop shows him a mercy he can never repay. Jean Valjean breaks his parole and starts again under a new name, but the police inspector Javert never stops hunting him. Their pursuit carries them from a factory town to the slums of Paris and the barricades of a student uprising, tying Valjean to the dying Fantine, her daughter Cosette and the idealistic Marius.
