Oliver Twist has known nothing but thin gruel and sharp words when he is sent from the parish workhouse to apprentice with an undertaker. Cold and frightened, he sets off for London on foot and falls in with the Artful Dodger, a cheerful young thief who leads him to Fagin's crooked den. There Oliver is taught the trade of the street, while the brutal Bill Sikes and the loyal Nancy pull at him from opposite sides.
