Visionaries: Robbins and MacMillan

Two ballets share the evening. Jerome Robbins's Dances at a Gathering sets ten dancers in simple, pastel-coloured clothes loose in a chain of solos, duets and group dances to Chopin's piano music, a plotless portrait of friendship, flirtation and shifting moods. Kenneth MacMillan's Song of the Earth follows a man and a woman shadowed by a masked Messenger of Death through Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, its songs sung live by two soloists.
