Marie van Goethem is a poor girl in Belle Epoque Paris who earns her place in the ballet school of the Opera, where hunger and long hours are the price of a dream. When the painter Edgar Degas asks her to pose for a sculpture, her life is split between the rehearsal room and his studio, and between the girl she is and the woman she is told she must become.
