In fifteenth-century Paris, crowds of refugees seek shelter at the cathedral of Notre-Dame, and among the outcasts is Esmeralda, a free-spirited street dancer. Three men fall under her spell: Quasimodo, the cathedral's hunchbacked bell-ringer; Frollo, the archdeacon torn between faith and desire; and Phoebus, the captain of the guard. As the authorities turn on the refugees, the three men's longing for her sets a dangerous chain of events in motion.
