The Innocent, a melancholy loner, is flying his kite when a large parcel arrives. Out of it springs the Trickster, a sharp-suited figure in stripes who conjures up a noisy kingdom and pulls the Innocent into it. There he meets a foolish King desperate for respect, the King's clowns, an obnoxious tourist and a very bad dog, and watches acrobats risk their necks on a high wire, a tower of chairs and a spinning Wheel of Death. He sets out to find his own place in this strange new world.
