The Threepenny Opera, originally titled Die Dreigroschenoper, is a satirical musical theatre work by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill that was first staged in Berlin at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm on 31 August 1928. Set in Victorian London, it centres on Macheath, the notorious criminal known as Mack the Knife, whose marriage to Polly Peachum draws him into a tangle of schemes involving her father, Jonathan Peachum, who controls the city's beggars.
