Duncan Sheik is taking the manga underground — Off Broadway this fall.
Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, a new musical with music and lyrics by Spring Awakening Tony winner Duncan Sheik, will premiere Off Broadway this autumn. The show is based on the celebrated Japanese manga by Moyoco Anno, serialised from 2013 to 2018 and awarded the Excellence Award at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2020.
Tony-winning director and choreographer Rob Ashford (Frozen, Thoroughly Modern Millie) helms the production. The team has built a brand-new Chelsea venue for the run: The Night Egg, named after a French brothel in the source novel. It sits inside the Chelsea Club — the building that housed Sleep No More for fourteen years.
Producers Kenny Kurokawa, Rayman, and executive producer Antonio Marion announced the premiere today. Specific dates and casting are still under wraps.
