Broadway is dark on West 49th Street tonight.
A fire broke out this morning at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre, the longtime home of The Book of Mormon, sending more than 130 FDNY personnel to the scene. One firefighter was injured. The blaze started in an electrical room between the fourth and fifth floors before spreading toward the roof.
Damage is reportedly limited to backstage areas — the auditorium itself was spared — but substantial repairs are needed on the fourth floor before the venue can reopen. Theatre owner ATG Entertainment and the production team say they are assessing damage now and will announce any disruption "as soon as possible".
The Book of Mormon recently celebrated its 15th anniversary on Broadway. For now, performances are suspended indefinitely.
